BENZYL ALCOHOL CERTIFICATE OF ANALYSIS

What is Benzyl Alcohol?

Molecular Formula (Benzyl Alcohol): C7H8O

Molecular Weight: 108.14 g/mol

Chemical Name: (Hydroxymethyl) Benzene

CAS Number: 100-51-6

It has a mild odor and burning properties. It is a primary alcohol with aromatic properties. It is defined as one of the simplest fatty alcohols containing phenyl.

As a local anesthetic, it can act to reduce pain associated with lidocaine injection.

It has the ability to easily form esters with various acids. It is composed of benzene.

Other names are as follows;

  • Benzoyl Alcohol

  • Phenylmethanol

  • Hydroxytoluene

  • Phenylmethyl alcohol

  • Benzylic Alcohol

  • Alpha-Hydroxytoluene

  • Benzal Alcohol

How is Benzyl Alcohol Produced?

Benzyl alcohol production is carried out by several methods. Among these:

  1. The reaction is carried out by the hydrogenation of Benzaldehyde.

  2. The reaction is carried out by the hydrolysis of Benzyl chloride.

  3. In the production reaction from Toluene, a 3-stage reaction is carried out with the hydrogenation of methyl benzoate. In the first stage, benzoic acid is oxidized to obtain toluene. In the second stage, it is subjected to an esterification reaction with methyl alcohol. It is obtained by the hydrogenation of the obtained methyl benzoate.

What are the Physical and Chemical Properties?

It has an aromatic odor. It is a clear colorless liquid. It has a bitter almond odor due to oxidation. It has a viscous property.

Its density is 1.045 g/ml.

It has flammable properties.

Density: 1.04 g/cm³

Melting Point: -15 °C

Boiling Point: 205 °C

Solubility: Slightly soluble in water; soluble in organic solvents.

In terms of solubility, it is slightly soluble in water. It is miscible with ether, ethyl alcohol and chloroform.

It is an unstable chemical. Therefore, it should not be stored for a long time. If left for a long time, it undergoes oxidation in the air and turns into benzaldehyde and benzoic acid. Therefore, it may have an almond flavor odor with a benzaldehyde scent.

In addition, it is oxidized to benzoic acid in the presence of antioxidants such as nitric acid.

What are the Usage Areas of Benzyl Alcohol?

  • It is used in the production of perfumes, soaps, ointments, and lotions.

  • It is used in paint stripper formulas produced for stripping immersion type, cured epoxy, and polyester paints in anhydrous form. In this application, substances such as Mono Ethanol Amine and Corrosion inhibitor are also used.

  • It is used as a polar solvent in solutions used for cleaning hard surfaces.

  • It is used as an excipient in the status of an antimicrobial agent in pharmaceutical preparations.

  • It is used as a flavoring substance in the perfumery sector.

  • Benzyl alcohol is used to thin epoxy resins.

  • Some rashes occur on the skin due to fungus. These rashes can be yellow or brown. These types of fungi can be body fungus, athlete's foot, and jock itch. It is used as an auxiliary substance together with Butenafine hydrochloride in the treatment of such skin diseases.

  • It is used as a solvent for gelatin, casein, and cellulose acetate.

  • In toothpaste production, it is used together with chemicals such as Sodium Carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, phosphoric acid, and sorbitol.

  • It is used as a solvent chemical for injectable preparations in pharmacy. However, it is an effective excipient with a notorious reputation.

  • It can be used as a food additive.

  • Pharmaceutical grade benzyl alcohol is used as a bacteriostatic and local anesthetic.

  • It is used as a solvent in this field while diaper rash cream is being produced. Bees Wax and Zinc Oxide, which will enter the cream formula, are dissolved with benzyl alcohol.

  • It is used as a solvent for ink, paint, varnish, and epoxy resin coatings.

  • It is used in the manufacture of epoxy resins that do not shrink completely and have thixotropic properties. Glycerin is also used in this application.

  • It acts as a solvent for Ammonium Carbonate and the surfactant used in this application to clean impurities on hard surfaces.

  • It is used as an auxiliary substance in the manufacture of ultrasound gel.

  • Its solvent property is utilized in toothpaste production. Benzyl alcohol is used to dissolve some preservative chemicals in this application. Sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate are preservative chemicals in toothpaste production.

  • Its activity against Gram-positive bacteria is high.

  • It can also be used as a degreasing agent, dyeing polyamide, and bonding aid.

  • It is used as an auxiliary substance in transdermal or percutaneous applications.

What are the Factors Affecting Prices?

Benzyl alcohol prices are directly dependent on the prices of the chemicals used in its production. As benzoic acid prices increase, the prices of this chemical will increase. At the same time, it depends on aldehyde prices. As aldehyde prices increase, prices will increase.

With the development of the pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors, the use of benzyl alcohol has increased. Therefore, the prices of this chemical have progressed increasingly.

As the companies that produce benzyl alcohol increase their stocks, prices will decrease for a short period.

Benzyl Alcohol Sales

Chemical substances are packaged in packages determined by international standards. These are sold starting from the smallest package to the largest package or in bulk with tanker. These can be 1 gram packaging, 1 ton big bag packaging, the smallest drum packaging, or packaging-free sales with tanker.
