What is Copper Sulfate?
Molecular Formula (Copper Sulfate): CuSO4
Molecular Weight: 159.61 g/mol
Chemical Name: Copper Sulfate
CAS Number: 7758-98-7
It is a bluish crystalline powder also known as bluestone. It is a blue-colored chemical used as a chemical input in the leather industry.
Although the anhydrous form has a gray-white or green appearance, the most commonly used form, copper sulfate pentahydrate (the 5-water form), physically has a blue appearance.
The aqueous form can be found in nature as chalcanthite.
It is the most common salt of copper on the market.
Its most widespread use worldwide is in the agricultural field. Approximately three-quarters is used in agriculture.
Its Other Names Are as Follows;
Cupric Sulfate
Copper (II) Sulfate
Blue Stone
Anhydrous
Pentahydrate
Copper fungicide
Fungicide
Fungicide chemical
How is Copper Sulfate Produced?
The production of this chemical substance is obtained worldwide from scrap copper through reaction with dilute sulfuric acid.
In a new production method for Copper Sulfate, scrap copper is first reacted with Ammonia and then oxidized with an oxidizing agent. The substance obtained is then sulfated using sulfuric acid again.
In some plants, it is obtained from ores. The form produced in these plants does not contain impurities such as dioxins.
It is also obtained from some copper refineries.
What are the Physical and Chemical Properties?
Cupric sulfate is a chemical in solid form with a white or grayish physical appearance. It is an extremely hygroscopic chemical.
The pentahydrate is in the blue form. It turns white if it loses its water content.
It has a pleasant odor.
The melting point is 590 °C. It begins to decompose above this temperature.
The boiling point is 650 °C.
In terms of solubility, it is highly soluble in hot and cold water. In other words, its solubility in water is approximately 243 g/L (0 °C water).
Its density is 3.6 g/cm3.
What are the Application Areas of Copper Sulfate?
It is used in the agricultural sector to eliminate copper deficiency in the soil. In some cases, copper deficiency is detected in animals. In addition, it can be used to treat copper deficiency in animals.
As a growth-stimulating chemical and nutrient in poultry production.
This active ingredient can be used in the manufacture of chemicals used as fungicides.
Slugs and snails that damage plants must be destroyed. For this reason, pesticides containing copper ore should be produced and applied.
In tomato production within the agricultural sector, tomato seeds may fail to germinate. Consequently, tomato seedlings cannot sprout anew. Copper sulfate is used to enable tomatoes to produce more fruit and for seedlings to sprout. Its use in this area ensures soil sterilization. It is applied in a mixture with ammonium carbonate.
In case of certain deficiencies, diseases occur in the feet of small and large livestock. Such diseases may occur depending on the physical conditions of the animals' environment and their nutritional conditions. Medicines containing this chemical can be used to treat diseases in the feet or hooves of animals.
As a disinfectant to prevent the proliferation of swine erysipelas and white spots in the offspring of large ruminants.
It acts as an excellent inhibiting agent to provide waste control in ponds where farmed fish are raised.
In the context of human health, to ensure the elimination of algal blooms in swimming pools.
It benefits from its antiseptic properties to eliminate fungal infections and is used as a germicide.
It is used in the manufacture of copper catalysts used in the pharmaceutical industry.
Wood consists of organic matter. It begins to rot over time. Copper-containing chemicals can be used to prevent wood decay.
Dry rot occurs in buildings. It is used as a plaster ingredient to prevent dry rot in buildings and to eliminate fungal infections.
Its effects on fungal cells include: Enzyme inhibition, Oxidative stress, Disruption of membrane permeability, and prevention of nutrient uptake.
A soluble metal salt is used to recover molybdenum from small amounts of molybdenite that appear as waste in copper and iron mines. This soluble metal salt can be Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate or another form.
It improves the taste and quality of wine by ensuring the removal of impurities such as hydrogen sulfide formed during wine production.
It is used to eliminate bad odors in the mouth and kill bacteria. Additionally, it is used in the manufacture of viscous liquids injected orally in gel form for the treatment of crop fungus disease in poultry, especially in pigeons.
In the agricultural sector, it is used as a fungicide by making Bordeaux Mixture. Bordeaux mixture is obtained by mixing Copper Sulfate and Slaked Lime (Ca(OH)2). This creates a slower-release copper source, which means lower toxicity.
What are the Factors Affecting Prices?
Prices vary depending on the prices of the chemicals used in its production. Prices change based on copper prices and sulfuric acid prices. When the prices of these chemicals increase, copper sulfate prices also increase. In the event of a decrease, prices will drop.
Prices will increase with the development of the agricultural sector and the increase in its use in that sector.
If the companies selling this chemical increase their stocks, copper sulfate prices will decrease temporarily.
Copper Sulfate Sales
Chemical substances are packaged in packages determined by international standards. These are sold starting from the smallest package to the largest package or in bulk with tanker. These can be 1 gram packaging, 1 ton big bag packaging, the smallest drum packaging, or packaging-free sales with tanker.
