What is Manganese Sulfate?
Manganese Sulfate Molecular formula: MnSO 4
Molecular Weight: 151.001 g / mol
Chemical Name: Manganese Sulfate
CAS Number: 7785-87-7
It is the manganese salt of sulfate. The manganese in this compound has a +2 valence. Manganese is one of the trace elements required in human metabolism and plants. Manganese sulfate is one of the most important manganese sources.
Like Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate and Copper Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate is a metal sulfate with +2 oxidation.
Other Names for Manganese Sulfate are as follows:
- Manganese Sulfate
- Manganous Sulfate
- Manganese (II) Sulfate
- 7785-87-7
- Manganese Sulfate Monohydrate
- Sulfuric Acid Magnesium Salt
- Anhydrous Manganese Sulfate
- Manganese (II) Sulfate
- Monohydrate
How is Manganese Sulfate Produced?
Manganese dioxide is extracted by reacting manganese ores with sulfuric acid. In this way, manganese sulfate is produced.
What are the Physical and Chemical Properties?
Manganese sulfate appears as white crystals in physical appearance.
It decomposes by breaking down above 850 °C.
The melting point is 700 °C.
Boiling Point: Information not available.
Its density is 3.25 g/cm³.
It is slightly soluble in methanol.
What are the Areas of Use?
- The element manganese benefits the action of certain enzymes in animals. Consequently, in the event of a manganese deficiency, these enzymes that provide activation in animals do not function well. As a result, trace amounts of manganese are required for animals to grow healthily. Chemicals containing manganese sulfate are used to eliminate health problems caused by manganese deficiency in animals.
- In steelmaking, less than 1% manganese sulfate by weight is used to ensure the steel is harder. If chemicals containing manganese are not used in steel production, the steel breaks during rolling and forging processes.
- In commercial activities in the metal sector, manganese must be present to prevent corrosion of alloys containing aluminum and magnesium. Manganese sulfate is used to prevent the corrosion of aluminum and magnesium-based alloys.
- Manganese sulfate is used in the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries and regular batteries.
- It is used in the treatment of municipal drinking water.
- Certain pesticides are produced in the agricultural sector. Among these are formulas containing Glycolic Acid and used as solvents. It is used for pH control in irrigation and chemical dosing systems and for dissolving lime.
- Fertilizers containing this chemical are used during the planting of plants grown on some calcareous soils.
- The soils where manganese deficiency is most intense are alkaline soils. That is, manganese deficiency is frequently seen in soils with high pH values.
- Manganese deficiency in plants is not due to a lack of manganese in the soil. Due to the pH level of the soil, manganese cannot bind to the plant healthily. Therefore, manganese deficiency occurs in plants. To eliminate these effects, fertilizers containing manganese sulfate are used. The application should be foliar (directly on the leaf) rather than to the soil.
- Manganese sulfate-containing fertilizers provide better effects when modified with fertilizers that provide acid dissolution.
- Manganese deficiency is observed in pasture animals. To eliminate this deficiency, 15 kg/hectare is used on plants. To address the deficiency in animals, it is used as a nutritional supplement in feeds at 4g/day for cows, 2g/day for heifers, and 1g/day for calves.
- It is used in lead-acid batteries to improve electrolytic properties. This ensures the battery performs better and also allows for a longer lifespan.
What are the Factors Affecting the Prices?
Manganese sulfate prices are influenced by the prices of the chemicals used in production. Prices will increase with the prices of manganese ores extracted from magnesite mines.
With the revitalization of agricultural land, the price of manganese sulfate will increase.
Manganese sulfate prices vary depending on their usage areas. As usage areas expand, prices will increase. Prices will decrease as companies selling the chemical increase their manganese sulfate stocks.
