Molecular Weight: 161.972 g/mol
Chemical Name: Sodium Chromate
CAS Number: 7775-11-3
This raw material consists of 2 Sodium (Na+) and 1 Chromate (CrO2-2) ions. It is a yellow crystalline solid.
It is an inorganic sodium salt. It is a carcinogenic and oxidizing chemical substance.
Its solid form has an orthorhombic structure.
Other Names are as Follows;
- (IV) Valence
- Chromium Disodium Oxide
- Chromate of Soda
- Neutral Form
- Anhydrous Form
- Chromium Sodium Oxide
- Sodium Monochromate
- Chromium Sodium
How is Sodium Chromate Produced?
In its production, Chrome Metal ore is melted in a reverberatory furnace in the presence of lime and soda with the help of air. After this process, the melt is dissolved in water. A small amount of sodium carbonate is added. Then the solution is poured. In the subsequent process, acidity is provided with acetic acid. It is concentrated and crystallized.
This Reaction is as follows;
4 Fe (CrO 2 ) 2 + 8 Na 2 CO 3 + 7 O 2 → 8 Na 2 CrO 4 + 2 Fe 2O 3 + 8 CO 2

It has properties that can cause fire with flammable substances.
What are the Usage Areas of Sodium Chromate?
- Among its usage areas, it is used to obtain Sodium Dichromate, which has intensive use in the chemical industry. Sodium Dichromate is also the main precursor for many chromium compounds.
- It is used for corrosion control purposes. In this field, it is used in the manufacture of corrosion inhibitors.
- It is used in the formulations of pigments.
- It is used in wool dyeing processes, wood preservation fields, drilling fluids, catalysts, and organic syntheses.
- It is used in the manufacture of paints and inks.
- It is used in the manufacture of pesticides.
- Corrosion occurs in geothermal power plants. To prevent corrosion, there are some corrosion inhibitor base chemicals. Sodium chromate is a chemical with this property.
- It is used as a chromate source in the manufacture of surface treatments for magnesium alloy materials.
What are the Factors Affecting Prices?
Prices have been increasing for a long time depending on the development of the industry. Chromate prices are generally expensive compared to other chemicals.
This Chromate compound price varies depending on the number of usage areas. As the usage area increases, the price of this chemical substance will increase because the produced raw material will not sufficiently meet the demand. This will drive the prices up.
