What is Sodium Molybdate?
Molecular Formula (Sodium Molybdate): Na2MoO4
Molecular Weight: 205.9 g/mol
Chemical Name: Sodium Molybdate
CAS Number: 7631-95-0
It is identified as molybdic acid sodium salt dihydrate. It is a chemical that acts as a cofactor for enzymes necessary for the metabolism and development of animals and plants.
It contains one molybdate element in its molecular structure. It has toxic properties.
Other Names Are As Follows;
Disodium Molybdate
7631-35-0
Molybdic Acid
Molybdic Acid, disodium salt
Sodium Molybdenum Oxide
Disodium Tetraoxomolybdate
Anhydrous Form
Dihydrate Form
How is Sodium Molybdate Produced?
Two different methods are applied in the production of Sodium Molybdate.
Method 1 is the Roasting Method;
In this production method, the molybdenum chemical is first roasted at high heat. In this way, molybdenum trioxide is formed. In the following process, washing is performed with Liquid caustic and a solution form is obtained. In this process, filtration and evaporation are performed sequentially. Then, the concentrated product is obtained by cooling, crystallization, separation, and drying at 70-80 °C.
Method 2 is the Recrystallization Method;
With this method, a raw material with higher purity can be obtained. After the recrystallization process is performed, it is dissolved in water. To perform the precipitation process, nitric acid must be added. In this way, the precipitation process is carried out.
It is then washed and dried. And high-purity molybdenum trioxide is obtained by sublimation at 700 °C. After adding sodium hydroxide solution, it is dried at 70-80 °C and cooled. And finally, sodium molybdate dihydrate is obtained.
What are the Physical and Chemical Properties?
In physical appearance, it is in the form of a white powder.
Melting Point is 687 °C.
Boiling Point: 1580 °C.
Density is 3.78 g/cm3.
Solubility in water is 84 g/100 ml at 100 °C.
Upon heating, it emits fumes together with sodium oxide in toxic form. It reacts violently in the presence of halogens. Accordingly, it poses an explosion and fire hazard in the presence of Hydrochloric acid and sodium hypochlorite.
Under normal conditions, it is a flammable substance. It explodes in the presence of magnesium.
What are the Usage Areas of Sodium Molybdate?
It is used in the manufacture of chemical substances with organic and inorganic structures.
Almost all types of corrosion can occur in geothermal power plants. Because geothermal fluids contain all ions and compounds. Corrosion inhibitors are used to prevent corrosion in steels used in geothermal power plants. Sodium Molybdate is among the most effective compounds for creating corrosion inhibitors.
Corrosion inhibitors are created by being used in the manufacture of closed-circuit water conditioning chemicals corrosion inhibitors.
It is used as an additive in finishing baths during the coating of metals in the plating industry.
Used as a reactive chemical.
It is used as a source of micronutrients needed for plants and animals.
In the production of cauliflower and broccoli in some acidic soils, 'whiptail' disease occurs. Molybdenum supplementation is required to prevent whiptail disease that may occur in plants. It is an important compound in these areas.
In Geothermal Energy plants, there are pipelines where hot water from underground circulates. These pipelines corrode over time. Corrosion Inhibitors must be used to prevent corrosion. Molybdate-containing inhibitors are used especially in systems with non-ferrous metals. It is used in the production of such inhibitors.
It is a component used for seed treatment.
It is used for additional passivation effect in the manufacture of products used as corrosion inhibitors in areas containing copper.
What are the Factors Affecting Prices?
Sodium Molybdate prices are directly dependent on the prices of chemical substances used in its production. Prices of raw materials will increase as Nitric Acid and Sodium hydroxide prices increase.
It is directly dependent on the usage areas. Prices will increase with the expansion of the agriculture sector and plating sector.
It is directly dependent on the stocks of companies selling sodium molybdate. As stocks increase, prices will experience short-term decreases.
Sodium Molybdate Sales
Chemical substances are packaged in packages determined by international standards. These are sold starting from the smallest package to the largest package or in bulk with tanker. These can be 1 gram packaging, 1 ton big bag packaging, the smallest drum packaging, or packaging-free sales with tanker.
