AEROSIL 200 CERTIFICATE OF ANALYSIS

What is Aerosil 200?

Molecular Formula (Aerosil 200): SiO2

Molecular Weight: 60.08 g/mol

Chemical Name: Silicon Dioxide

CAS Number: 112945-52-5

It is a highly dispersed, lightweight chemical substance with a very low density. Since it has hydrophilic properties, it has the ability to absorb water from its environment.

Fumed silica is a powder consisting of amorphous silica spheres with a particle size smaller than a micron.

Other Names are as Follows;

  • Silica
  • Silicon Dioxide
  • Fumed Silica
  • AEROSIL 200
  • Cabosil
  • Ofisim
  • Pyrogenic Silica
  • Smoked Silica

How is it Produced?

The production of colloidal fumed silica is obtained as a result of the hydrolysis of chlorosilanes using a high-temperature hydrogen-oxygen flame. The temperature in Silicon Dioxide production is approximately 18000 °C. At this temperature, the substance in a molten state is rapidly cooled to ensure it remains in an amorphous state.

What are the Physical and Chemical Properties?

In terms of physical appearance, its non-crystalline form is transparent or gray in color. It has the appearance of an amorphous powder. It is odorless.

The particle size is submicroscopic fumed silica.

Melting Point is above 1600 °C.

Density: 0.15 g/cm³ (in powder form)

Boiling Point: No information available.

In terms of solubility, it generally does not dissolve in organic solvents and acids. However, due to its structure, it dissolves in hydrofluoric acid. It also dissolves in the presence of hot alkali hydroxide, namely in hot sodium hydroxide.

Aerosil 200 is approximately 150 mg/L in water at 258 °C. However, in this process, the pH level should be approximately 7.

What are the Usage Areas of Aerosil 200?

  • In pharmaceutical applications, it is used for filling tablets and capsules due to its small particle size and large surface area. The purpose of use in these applications is to regulate the flow properties of dry powders.
  • Silicon dioxide in colloidal structure is used to stabilize some chemical mixtures. It is also used for thickening and suspending gels and semi-solid preparations.
  • It is a very good thixotropic agent.
  • It is used in single-use tea bags to prevent clumping and increase fluidity.
  • Fumed silica is added to epoxy binder systems. In this way, moisture problems that may occur during the curing of epoxy are eliminated.
  • Colloidal silicon dioxide can act as a tablet disintegrant. In some application areas, it is used as an adsorbent dispersion.
  • It is an important component of silicone rubber products. Therefore, when Fumed Silica is added to polymers, it provides an interface between the solid phase and the soft phase.
  • Bacterial infections occur in the udders of animals during calf suckling from milk feeders. Due to this problem, disinfection is necessary. Silicon Dioxide is used for this purpose.
  • Silicon dioxide can be used as a thickening agent during the production of hair curling products.
  • Silicon dioxide is used as an anti-sagging agent. In addition, it is used to prevent sedimentation.
  • Silicon is used in solar cells. These silicons have unique properties. Therefore, silicon specific to solar cells is produced. In this production, there is a furnace using an arc reactor. In this furnace, reduction is carried out with Active carbon.
  • It is used in the manufacture of some adhesives and sealing products.
  • Fumed Silica is used as an anti-caking agent in toothpaste production.
  • It is used in the formulations of paint remover products to ensure good adhesion on paint surfaces. In this way, viscosity is increased.

What are the Other Usage Areas of Aerosil 200?

  • It is used in the manufacture of unsaturated polyester resins.
  • During wine production, fermentation can proceed in a controlled manner. For this, fermentation release agents are used. These contain active ingredients that release nitrogen. Silicon Dioxide is used to ensure stable release within these products (tablets).
  • Pure silicon dioxide is used in the production of first-generation solar cells. Pure silicon dioxide is obtained by the floating zone technique.
  • It is used together with maltodextrin in the production of powder essence.
  • Hydrophobic silica is used in the production of silicone-based defoamers. That is, the form with water-repellent properties is used.
  • Silicon Dioxide (Aerosil 200) is used in the manufacture of aquarium accessories to prevent the dispersion of the paints used.
  • It is used in the production of Silicified Microcrystalline cellulose for wet granulation. Its binding and diluent properties are utilized in the production of Microcrystalline Cellulose here.
  • Silicon Dioxide is used for the production of corrosion and wear-resistant aluminum-coated effect pigments in paints used in the automotive sector and industrial coatings.
  • It is used together with L-Carnitine and L-Tartaric Acid in the manufacture of chewable tablets produced for sports nutrition.
  • It is used together with isopropyl alcohol to create artificial smoke for battle scenes in film studios.

What are the Factors Affecting Prices?

The price of Aerosil 200 is directly dependent on the prices of the chemicals used in its production. At the same time, as fuel prices increase, fumed silica prices will increase.

The price of this chemical requires high technology. In addition, it is difficult to preserve. For this reason, it is an expensive raw material.

It is generally used in specific areas. Being a special chemical affects its prices.
