OCTISALATE CERTIFICATE OF ANALYSIS

What is Octisalate?

Molecular Formula (Octisalate): C15H22O3

Molecular Weight: 250.33 g/mol

Chemical Name: Octyl Salicylate/2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate

CAS Number: 118-60-5

It is an organic compound, commonly known as octyl salicylate or ethylhexyl salicylate, used as an ingredient in sunscreens and cosmetic products to absorb UVB (ultraviolet) rays from the sun.

Octyl Salicylate is a chemical compound in the ester group, industrially produced by the condensation of Salicylic Acid with 2-Ethylhexanol.

Octyl Salicylate is a colorless, oily liquid with a slight floral scent.

Other Names are as Follows;

  • Octyl Salicylate
  • 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate
  • Ethyl Hexyl Salicylate
  • Octyl Salicylate
  • Salicylic Acid 2-Ethylhexyl Ester
  • 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate
  • 118-60-5
  • Salicylic Acid Octyl Ester
  • trans-2-Hexenyl Salicylate
  • Benzoic Acid, 2-Hydroxy-, 2-Ethylhexyl Ester
  • 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate

What are its Physical and Chemical Properties?

In appearance, it is a clear, colorless to slightly yellowish chemical.

Boiling point has been determined as 189 – 190 °C.

Flash point has been determined as 113 °C.

In terms of stability, it is a chemical incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.

Its density is in the range of 1.011-1.016 at 25 °C.

Melting Point: -10 °C

Boiling Point: 217-220 °C

Solubility: Insoluble in water; soluble in oil and organic solvents.

How is Octisalate Stored?

2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate is packaged in 180 kg plastic barrels. When storing Octyl Salicylate, the packaging should be stored in areas away from sunlight, not directly exposed to it.

It can degrade if its packaging is stored in areas with direct sunlight.

It can be stored safely for 24 months as long as the packaging remains unopened. It should be stored at a temperature of 25 °C.

What are the Usage Areas of Octisalate?

  • The usage areas of Octisalate (Octyl Salicylate) include the cosmetics industry. It is used in the manufacturing of sunscreen creams to create UV filters.
  • It is used to impart water-resistant properties to formulations used in the manufacturing of sunscreens.
  • 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate degrades upon exposure to sunlight, therefore it must be used and applied in conjunction with other sunscreen agents.
  • It is used to stabilize Avobenzone to extend the duration of sun protection.
  • It is also used in the plastics industry. Using octisalate is the best way, especially if sun-protective materials are to be manufactured.
  • Although 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate is used in many areas, it is not widely preferred due to its price.

What are the Factors Affecting its Price?

Octisalate prices are directly dependent on the prices of the chemical substances used in the production of 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate. The price will increase as the price of Salicylic acid increases. The price of Octyl Salicylate is also directly dependent on the price of 2-Ethylhexanol. As the price of 2-Ethylhexanol increases, the price of this raw material will increase.

With the approach of the summer months, the price of Octisalate will increase. This is because the use of this raw material in production will increase. In the summer, the manufacturing of sunscreen creams, lotions, and sprays will accelerate.

The price of Octyl Salicylate will decrease for a short period with the increase in the number of companies producing 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate. However, prices will eventually reach a stable level.

Companies that sell 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate generally determine the prices of Octisalate.
