BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE CERTIFICATE OF ANALYSIS

What is Benzalkonium Chloride?

Molecular Formula (Benzalkonium Chloride): C21H38NCl

Molecular Weight: 340 g/mol

Chemical Name: Dodecyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride

CAS Number: 63449-41-2 or 8001-54-5 or 139-07-1

It belongs to the quaternary ammonium class of cationic surfactants, which are non-oxidizing biocides.

BAC 50 is a chemical with disinfectant properties widely used in medical, livestock, and personal hygiene products.

Even at low concentrations, it has a very high efficacy against fungi, enveloped viruses, and algae.

BAC 50 has the advantage of not being affected by water hardness. This property provides Benzalkonium Chloride with dispersion and penetration characteristics.

It is a quaternary ammonium compound like Benzyl Trimethyl Ammonium Chloride, but it is more toxic than this compound.

Other names are as follows;

  • Quaternary Ammonium Compounds

  • Benzyl-C8-18-alkyldimethyl chlorides

  • Alkyldimethylbenzylammonium Chloride

  • Alkyldimethyl (phenylmethyl) quaternary ammonium Chloride

  • Ammonium alkyldimethyl (phenylmethyl) chloride

  • Ammonium Alkyldimethyl benzyl chloride

  • Lauryl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride

  • Benzyl lauryl dimethyl ammonium chloride

  • BKC

  • Dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride

  • BAC 50

What are the Physical and Chemical Properties of Benzalkonium Chloride?

Its physical and chemical properties are listed as follows.

Its physical appearance is a pale straw to colorless liquid. It is in a clear, slightly hazy form.

The odor of BAC 50 is difficult to detect, but it has a faint almond-like smell.

Its density is in the range of 0.96 g/mL to 1 g/mL.

It is soluble in water in all proportions. It is miscible with Methanol and Acetone.

The pH of a 5% w/w solution of Benzalkonium Chloride at 20 °C is 7.5 (±1).

It is in a liquid form at 20 °C.

Melting point is -5 °C.

Boiling point is 100 °C.

It is not compatible with anionic detergents and nitrates.

It is considered to be flammable.

What are its Effects on Human Health?

Benzalkonium Chloride is a chemical harmful to the environment. In case of eye contact, rinse with water for several minutes. Avoid release to the environment.

Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using this product.

It is very toxic to aquatic life.

How is it Stored?

Benzalkonium Chloride is packaged in 200 L plastic drums or 1000 L IBCs. It can be stored for 1 year in a shaded room and a dry area.

What are the Usage Areas of Benzalkonium Chloride?

  • Benzalkonium is used in many sectors.

  • It is used to inhibit corrosion in pipelines used for transferring petroleum gases. In this application area, it is also used as an emulsifier and sludge breaker for enhanced oil recovery.

  • It is used as an excipient in the manufacturing of nasal decongestant sprays.

  • Due to its germicidal properties, it is used in the manufacturing of sanitation chemicals, and in the formulations of personal care, hospital, livestock, food, and dairy products.

  • It serves as a preservative and emollient in various topical and ocular products, helping to characterize their efficacy.

  • In the food and beverage industry, it is used in the formulations of cleaners and sanitizers because it is non-toxic, non-corrosive, and does not stain or leave marks.

  • It is used as a disinfectant in the dairy industry, cold storage facilities, milk storage tanks, slaughterhouses, bottling plants, and the fishing industry. Benzalkonium Chloride is also used in beer manufacturing.

  • In the polymer and coating industry, it is widely used as an antistatic agent, emulsifier, and preservative. (Wood treatment, paints, and Electronics Sector)

  • In the chemical industry, it is used in various applications as a precipitant, phase transfer catalyst, emulsifier, and de-emulsifier.

  • It is used in formulations for swimming pools and for water and wastewater treatment.

  • BAC 50 is used to add a disinfecting effect to eye drops.

  • It is used in wet wipe production to prevent the growth of bacteria and microorganisms.

  • In aquaculture fish farms, it reduces harmful substances by providing better hygiene. The use of Benzalkonium Chloride here includes general disinfection, removal of parasites from fish, and treatment of infectious diseases in farmed aquatic products.

  • It is a preservative chemical used extensively in ophthalmic preparations.

  • It is an effective bactericidal and fungicidal agent that helps minimize the growth of organisms in multi-dose containers.

  • It is used as a protective active ingredient in the manufacturing of chemicals developed for timber preservation. In this application, it is used together with Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG).

  • It is used as a powerful antibacterial agent in the manufacturing of hand sanitizers.

  • It is used in the cellulose and paper industry. Its purpose here is for slime control and odor management.

  • It is used in the textile industry.

  • It is also used in the leather industry to prevent bacterial growth.

  • In the veterinary field, it can be used to disinfect the skin of injured animals before surgical intervention.

  • It is used in the manufacturing of antiseptic solutions for the treatment of PDD (Papillomatous Digital Dermatitis) - foot rot in sheep, cattle, and other ungulates. It is applied through footbaths.

  • It is an effective substance against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Therefore, it exhibits a broad spectrum of activity against fungi and algae.

  • Due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, it has disinfectant and antiseptic qualities.

What Factors Affect its Price?

The price of Benzalkonium Chloride is primarily directly proportional to the prices of the chemicals used in its production. As the prices of chemicals used in the manufacturing of BAC 50 increase, the price of this compound will also increase.

The price will increase as the usage areas of Benzalkonium Chloride expand.

The price of BAC 50 has been increasing since it began to be used because the application areas of Benzalkonium Chloride are continuously expanding.

Although the price of BAC 50 may experience a temporary decrease due to an increase in production facilities, it eventually stabilizes.

The price of Benzalkonium Chloride increases with advancing technology. This is because as technology develops, its application areas also expand, which in turn increases its price.
